Τον Ιούνιο του 2004, ο πρώην Πρωθυπουργός Βικτωρίας The Hon Steve Bracks, ανακοίνωσε την εδραίωση ενός ετήσιου σχολικού διαγωνισμού όπου παιδιά της τρίτης τάξης του Γυμνασίου θα μπορούσαν να λάβουν μέρος με εργασίες τους (όπως ποιήματα και εκθέσεις) οι οποίες αναφέρονται στο πνεύμα των Αυστραλών που έχασαν τη ζωή τους στον πόλεμο και τι αυτό σημαίνει για τους νέους σήμερα. Οι νικητές αυτού του διαγωνισμού που ήταν δέκα μαθητές από τη Βικτώρια, είχαν την ευκαιρία να συμμετέχουν σε ένα ταξίδι οργανωμένο από την πολιτειακή κυβέρνηση σε διάφορες χώρες. Μια απ' αυτές τις χώρες φέτος ήταν η Ελλάδα. Τα παιδιά αυτά θα επισκέπτονταν επίσης τη Σιγκαπούρη και Μαλαισία. Στην Ελλάδα θα πήγαιναν στη Θεσσαλονίκη και Κρήτη. Στη Θεσσαλονίκη ο Δήμαρχος κ. Βασίλειος Παπαγεωργόπουλος μετά χαράς δέχτηκε τους μαθητές, τους παρέθεσε γεύμα, τους ξενάγησε στην πόλη και τους έδωσε δώρα. In June 2004 the former Premier, The Hon. Steve Bracks, announced the establishment of an annual schools competition where Year Nine students could submit entries ranging from poems to essays that explore what the “Spirit of ANZAC” means to young people and communities today. Student winners then travel on an international Study Tour to sites of significance to Australian service men and women. The inaugural Study Tour was conducted in April 2005 and travelled to sites in Western Europe, which were expanded upon in 2007, and in 2006 the group visited South East Asia. This year, the Study Tour was to visit sites in Greece, Singapore and Malaysia.
Below you will find more information about the student's visit to the countries above, put together by the City of Melbourne and in particular Sue Clerk. It was provided to the City of Thessaloniki on account of the visiting students who were to visit the city and be received by the Mayor Mr V. Papageorgopoulos. The whole thing worked out very well, with the Mayor happy to receive the children and present them with gifts of the city of Thessaloniki. Please press on the photos below to view the larger image.
